Bohra women stand alongside with the Muslim women in fight against FGM at the Bebaak Collective

In New Delhi, on 27th and 28th February 2016 , a collective of Muslim women's organizations under the banner of Bebaak Collective participated to demand the fundamental rights to life, dignity, equality and non-discrimination, for freedom of religion and expression for Muslim women. It brought together the visions and struggles of women’s movements, people’s movements, democratic and civil rights movements for an equitable and just society for all the citizens of this country.

The meet was one more attempt at re-claiming the democratic spaces and demand equal opportunities for all. The rallying call for this convention was “ Muslim Aurton Ki Awaaz: Sadak se Sansad tak.

This convention and rally was organised by Bebaak Collective, a forum of autonomous groups and individuals, striving to further the rights of Muslim women.  The Bebaak Collective comprises the following organizations: Sanatkada Sadbhavna Trust, Lucknow; Association for Advocacy and Legal Initiative (AALI), Lucknow; Vanangana, Bandha; Pragati Madhyam Samiti, Chitrakoot; Pehchaan, Dedhradun; Muhim, Farukabad; Aastitva, Saharanpur; Parvaaz, Ahmedabad; Sahiyar, Vadodara; Muslim Mahila Manch, Nagpur; Aawaz-E-Niswaan, Mumbai.

Speak Out On FGM was represented by Masooma Ranalvi and Saleha Paatwala.

At the meet, Masooma Ranalvi spoke about the practice of FGM still prevalent in the Bohra community and called upon the collective strength of the women’s movement to include FGM as one more instance of the many forms of violence perpetrated on women and the girl child.
