FGM case in Australia becomes Mumbai's talking point

A case related to female genital mutilation (FGM) in Australia has become a talking point in the city. This comes after an Australian appeal court overturned the conviction of three people accused of FGM. The appeals court ruling in Australia has created a ripple like it did when it has convicted three people. The appeal verdict comes even as the Supreme Court is hearing a matter on FGM.

Two years ago, three people were convicted of practicing FGM on two girls. As per the news website ABC News, the conviction was set aside as the evidence showed that victims remain intact. Earlier, three people including a priest, mother and a nurse were convicted for performing FGM, which is banned in the country. .

FGM is largely followed among millions from the Dawoodi Bohra community. The verdict had different reactions from people who are party to the FGM case in SC. Dawoodi Bohra Women's Association For Religious Freedom (DBWRF), a trust that represents over 69,000 of practicing Dawoodi Bohra women welcomed the verdict by the New South Wales Court of Criminal Appeals. DBWRF's impleadment application is being heard in the SC.
