WeSpeakOut has been working for the past 3 years to eliminate Khafz/FGM in the Bohra community.

FGM is known as Khafz in the Bohra community and is equivalent to Type 1 or Type 4 FGM as classified by the World Health Organization.

As described in the Bohra religious texts, it is the removal of the prepuce tissue from the clitoris, and is often termed as ‘haram ki boti’. It is being practiced in the Dawoodi Bohra, Sulemani Bohra and Alvi Bohra Communities (Shia Muslims) for centuries, where 5-7 year old girls are cut.

Most women are ignorant about the relevance of the practice; they continue practicing it because they are told it is a part of their shariyat (religious law). Even those who are against the practice, and may have the courage to not practice it on their daughters, will not speak up about it because of the dreaded fear of being excommunicated. It is because of the fear of social boycott that the voices of Bohra men and women opposing Khafz/FGM are rarely heard.

Through the "My Voice Against Khafz/FGM" campaign WeSpeakOut wishes to amplify the voices and sentiments of the growing numbers of those opposing Khafz.

We appeal to you to lend your voice to this cause. Send us your voice recording expressing your views against the practice of Khafz/FGM in our community and be an agent for the change you wish to see.

You can remain anonymous; feel free to speak in your mother tongue. It would be nice if you can mention your age and state/country.
